Is This Domain Name Worth 14 Grand?

The domain name chips.xin is currently listed for sale on Alibaba Cloud at a price of ¥99,999 (≈$14,000; please click the domain name directly for purchase).

In English, 'chips' usually refer to fried chips, but also 'microchips'—a high-value 'premium word' in the era of artificial intelligence. But you might wonder: with a .xin suffix instead of popular ones like .com or .ai, is a $14-grand price tag really unreasonable?

To put it in perspective: if it were chips.com, its value would be far higher. The estimated value of chips.com exceeds $1 million according to Atom.com.

Even for non-mainstream suffixes, pairing them with 'chips' boosts their value significantly. For example, registering chips.tech on Dynadot costs $2,750 for the first year and subsequent renewal.

By comparison, chips.xin costs only ¥88 (≈$12.3) for annual renewal. More importantly, the .xin suffix shares an intrinsic connection with 'chips' that no other suffix can match.

Officially, .xin is a globally recognized TLD managed by Elegant Leader Limited, a subsidiary of Alibaba. In Chinese, 'xin' corresponds to a number of characters like 信 (xìn, meaning 'trust' or 'integrity'), 心 (xīn, 'heart'), 新 (xīn, 'new'), 欣 (xīn, 'joy'), and most importantly,  芯 (xīn, 'microchips').

Yes, 'xin' can mean '(micro)chips' in Chinese. So when you combine 'chips' with the .xin suffix, you get a domain that’s thematically aligned in both languages.

What’s more, the .xin suffix is approved by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, making it eligible for official registration in China—an important advantage for businesses targeting the Chinese market.

Given all this, does the $14-grand price tag still seem too high?
